TARLTON, THE GH ROAD
EATING AND SLEEPING ALONG
"THE GREAT HOPEWELL ROAD"
Historic downtown Circleville offers many restaurants, from casual coffee bars to fine Italian dining (The Tuscan Table, 122 North Court Street, 740-477-3040), plus of course the opportunity to sample some of Wittich’s candies from the oldest family-run confectionary in the US. The Castle Inn Bed and Breakfast (a crenellated mansion at 610 South Court Street, 740-412-2472) offers accommodations.
On the charming, tree-shaded square in the heart of Lancaster, Shaw’s Restaurant and Inn provides exceptionally fine dining and 25 luxurious, individually-decorated guest rooms (123 North Broad Street, Lancaster, 740-654-1842). For visitors who may prefer to see most of the ancient Ohio sites via daytrips from a single, central location, Shaw’s would be the ideal base: a central location, in a beautiful town, with easy quick access to Newark, Chillicothe, Columbus, and Athens. (Only Marietta or southwest Ohio would be a stretch from here.)
